I had met Ray Lampe very briefly at the World Food Championships where I was judging in 2014 as he was walking by me. We chatted for a minute or two and he was kind enough to take a pic with me.
Fast forward to early 2016 and my new foodie friend and fellow BBQ enthusiast, Todd Sturtz told me that he was friends with Dr. BBQ himself, Ray Lampe. A couple of weeks later, Ray was in San Diego and Todd said, “How would you like to meet him?” Hell yeah was my answer and we all decided to go to lunch.
What better place to take him then our own authentic taste of Texas at Grand Old BBQ y Asado. I think the owner of GOB, Andy Harris might have been as thrilled as I was to meet Ray.
If you know anything about the world of BBQ, you know who Ray is. He’s known as Dr. BBQ and is writing his ninth book about cooking on the Big Green Egg! He’s a bona fide celeb in our world and has judged, cooked and appeared in competitions all over the country and been on TV many times.
And Ray turned out to be THE nicest guy! So was his beautiful wife, Sandi. We all chatted away and became instant friends. Several of our other foodie friends met up with us and for some it was their first time at GOB. Ray and everyone there was super impressed.
And of course, Andy set us up with a taste of almost everything in the hizzy!! From his amazing beef ribs with that awesome peppery bark, to mutton, to that soft as a baby’s butt TX turkey, my fave (The Ribs of course!) and his incredible sides. we were wanting for nothing! Then Todd added some Nomad Donuts, so we had to make a wee bit more room for a taste of those sugary, doughy bits of heaven. It was a GREAT day in San Diego!!! Thanks Andy!!!
