Who says ya gotta own a building nowadays to serve up some competition level Que? Jerry McCray knows you don’t have to. He just put a pop up on the back patio of Third Avenue Alehouse in Chula Vista and voila, a new BBQ spot is born!
Jerry had been messaging me for a few months to come out and try his Que. Being in the middle of competition season, I get a bit burned out on BBQ if I don’t curtail it just a wee bit in between comps. So, I kept putting him off. Silly me. Should have got my butt out there a long time ago. But the wait was well worth it. Jerry competes himself once in awhile too, so he understands what it takes to serve up this level of smoky goodness.
Everyone knows I’m the rib girl and he doesn’t always have ribs. So, if you’re craving them, message him on Facebook and he’ll let you know what he’s cooking up. His ribs had just the right touch of smokiness to them and had a nice little pink smoke ring on the edges. He has a nicely spiced rub on them and just a slight bit of sauce that he glazes on there. They had the right amount of toothsomeness to pull away from the bone like a champ. Rib girl approves!
Jerry and his wife, Doreen have a sweet deal at Third Street Alehouse. He sets up in the back patio, which is friendly, clean and cozy with about 4 picnic tables. You can also bring your food back into the alehouse and scarf it down.
Of course they serve up some delicious pork butt dishes too. Along with some of the juiciest pulled pork I’ve ever tried, they make something called a Redneck Sundae. This parfait-looking-cup of deliciousness is a layered creation with pulled pork, cole slaw and beans on the bottom…..burrrrp! Excuuuuuse me!
A mighty fine butt if I do say so myself!
Here is proof that his pork also falls off the bone!
Star of the show is the pulled pork sando. If I had any criticism of this delectable delight, it would be that I would prefer either a sturdier bun and I would like the insides toasted for a bit of crunch. They also serve pork tacos.
His beans are of the not too sweet variety. so if ya gotta have them that way, just squirt a bit of some BBQ sauce onto them. Sorry Jerry…this girl likes things on the sweet side. But they also have BIG chunks of the pork butt in them….mmmm….good.
Pork Belly’s BBQ can be found at 3rd Street Alehouse on certain Saturday evenings from 5 pm until they run out. Check the Alehouse’s web site for when Pork Belly’s BBQ will be there.
